 In their raw state on the tree
sloes are eaten by  birds and insects . . .

 . . . but can be picked by humans
for making sloe gin, sloe wine, sloe brandy,
sloe jelly, sloe and apple jam, sloe syrup,
sloe plum cheese and sloe gin chocolates.
